What are you doing to help your teen prepare for college?

In this day and age, it’s a no-brainer that a high school diploma just doesn’t cut it in the workplace the way it used to when we were teen. Now, a college degree is required for just about every decent paying job unless, of course, you have ten years to spare working up the cooperate latter.
If your teen is just entering into high school with the “I don’t need to worry about that right now,” type of attitude it’s your responsibility to teach them otherwise. Even though they may believe it’s too early to start or that they have plenty of time . . . they’re wrong. Steer them in the right direction.
How? Here are some things to keep under the microscope:
· Place focus on college preparation courses that will qualify your teen for the college of their choice.
· Follow a college preparation reading guide with them, outside of their high school curriculum, to help with readiness.
· Devise a plan and goals to work toward in terms of GPA, SAT scores, and elective courses needed.
· Determine which sports, groups, work study programs and other activities would be beneficial to college application qualifications (and encourage active participation).
· Who will your teen need recommendations from? Figure this out and learn the right way to teach your teen how to approach them.
· Practice writing college essays with your teen periodically so they do not face “blank page” anxieties.
There are a number of excellent resources available offering very comprehensive advice and planning tips for preparing your teen for college. Your best bet is to hit the library with your teen first, and figure out which resources will work and which will not. If necessary, purchase these materials for long term use.
