The Smells of Childhood
August 19th 2008 17:59
Have you ever noticed how smells can take you back to a special childhood memory? For me, it’s the smell of cookies baking (mostly lemon cookies because that meant something special was on the horizon). The smell of anything to do with pumpkin spices also evokes special childhood memories for me, too.
I want to create these memories for my children, too. We’ve always had “after school snack” here, but I’d like to create something a bit more special than just leaving apples on the table for them. There’s something about coming home to fragrant smells that can’t be replaced.
We’re also going to start having special desserts after dinner from now on, too. This will replace the habit of having a snack right before bed. They’ve been so excited when they see a banana bread baking, or if they see me mixing up pudding. It’s very simple things, but they still love the experience.
The idea that, when they walk through the door after a long day of school or walking into the kitchen after doing homework, that they’ll be greeted with something they can really look forward to . . . something comforting that will bring on good conversation and memories they’ll enjoy looking back on. It doesn’t have to be “junk food,” but rather anything delicious (like a pot roast or pork tenderloin, that sort of thing).
What smells evoke special childhood memories for you? Are you trying to create those same kinds of memories for your children?

Bread baking, coffee brewing, freshly cut grass, rain on the way, just-sliced grapefruits and oranges, Mum's perfume, Dad's aftershave, leather, and (disapprove all you want, folks, but this was a very pleasant smell for me): the smell of a cigarette just after it's lit.
Oh, and horse dung. Love that smell. Skunk, too (from a distance)
