Got Any Potty Training Advice?
November 5th 2006 15:43
I think I'm at my wits end. My son is 3 1/2 years old and refuses to go on the potty. I have tried every piece of advice that people have given me. He will pee on the potty if I take him and make him. But he does not understand that he needs to take the initiative to go when he feels the need.
My biggest struggle is getting him to poop on the potty. He hides from me and poops in his pants. I don't understand why he would rather sit in dirty pull-ups, then tell me he has to go. I don't want to be too hard on him. But the pooping in his pants has got to stop. The only thing I haven't tried is one of those silly musical potties... He won't even respond to rewards like candy and toys.
I was hoping some of you would have some advice for me! Thanks!

Hi Kristen,
Im no parent and therefore probably have less of an idea about this than anyone.
BUT -
how about simulating the the excitement/urgency either a) through role play (i.e. when you need to go)
b) or when he needs go..
Back in my babysitting days I piggy back rided the kids to their beds... my point is if its fun, they will want to do it.
Goodluck!

I'm sure this is no help at all. I tried everything I could think of and everything I read about to get my daughter to use the potty. She had no interest, like your son. Suddenly, one day she decided to use the potty and she has been ever since.
I guess it's just that they have to reach a certain point in their development to have the interest.
