Our Blended Family
September 5th 2008 12:33
I’m constantly asked, “what it like in your household with all the kids coming and going all the time?” Well, before getting into that, here’s how our family is defined:
· I have two sons, ages six and eight.
· My fiancé has one daughter, age seven.
· My fiancé and I are guardians for his fifteen-year-old nephew.
Each week, we have three visitation schedules to keep track of:
· My sons visit with their dad from Friday to Saturday one week, and all weekend the following week. The weeks that they’re home Saturdays, they visit with their grandmother the following Sunday.
· My fiancé’s daughter visits with her mom every weekend, and will periodically visit with her grandmother (at least once per month) for the weekend.
· My fiancé’s nephew visits with his mom, his dad, or his grandparents every weekend (or some combination of all them in one weekend).
Yes, it’s a lot to keep track of. Sometimes we have to help with carpooling. For the most part, though, they’re all picked up and dropped off here . . . otherwise, I’m sure we’d feel like a taxi (or bus) service!
So, as you can see, we’re a blended family in every sense of the term. This phrase is offensive to some, but not to us. Sometimes, managing all of their schedules feels like a full-time job. Especially since we’re coming upon sports schedules, the fact that my fiancé’s nephew visits with his mom sometimes during the week, and we have to meet with “other parents” for updates and “conferences” so often.
No wonder I’m so tired by the end of the week!
