New Routines Are Challenging

Okay, so we’re a family of constant transition. We’re a blended family, so my step-daughter (age 7) visits with her mom on the weekends and two my sons (ages 6 and 8) visit with their dad periodically as well. My nephew (age 15) is here for about 70% of his time off from school during the week, and visits with his mom on the weekends.
Yesterday was our first day into the homework routine with my nephew and my three other kids were very inquisitive. It was yet another transition. Why does he have such thick books and so many of them? Why does he need so many notebooks? What’s that stuff over there for? How many classrooms does he have to go to every day? Lots and lots of questions, and when they saw his homework load on his first day of school, they ran away.
I can’t blame them for wondering and not understanding what was going on. They’re also no used to me giving my attention to someone new, particularly concentrated attention necessary for doing homework. I multi-tasked as best as I could (answering their questions, cooking supper, and doing other household must-do’s while helping him with what he didn’t understand) . . . but, I’m not going to lie, it was very overwhelming at first. I’m looking forward to when this transition smoothes out.
