Reading is Stupid
August 4th 2008 12:37
These are typical comments in my household, particularly when my children don’t see me setting a good example. While I do a lot of reading on the computer, the kids can’t really relate to that because it’s not a book. How do I solve the negative comments surrounding reading?
1. Lead by example: I keep two novels on my bedside table that the kids see me reading two or three times per week before bed. There are hundreds of books scattered in baskets and in piles all over the house, everything ranging from children’s books to art books to cookbooks and everything in between.
3. Confidence builders: My children feel very confident when they accomplish reading tasks, particularly those with difficult words. I remind them of that good feeling, and then encourage them to do more. Their enthusiasm is almost immediate.
We incorporate reading in our regular morning routines. Each day, right after they wake up, they read anywhere from a half hour to one hour per day. Then, we have other reading times scattered throughout the day.
What are your solutions when reading becomes a problem?
