Journal Writing Thoughts
July 25th 2008 18:30
I’ve been keeping a journal on and off since I was eleven years old. It didn’t occur to me exactly how long that was until just now (I’m 33). Anyway, when I was seventeen, I destroyed the dozen or so journals I had filled in a moment of haste. Trust me when I say I regret decision a lot.
I didn’t pick up journaling again until I was 22 and I haven’t stopped. Since then, I’ve filled 13 ½ journals with text, and I have five or six art journals going. I also have journals for my kids filled with their milestone moments.
Why is keeping a journal so important to me?
Well, for many reasons, but the number one reason because I don’t want my loved ones to have any questions at all about who I was, what my thoughts were, and what my life was like. When my grandmother passed away, I wished some journals would turn up when we were sorting through her belongings. I know I’ll have that same wish about my own mother when the time comes, despite my knowledge of the fact that she doesn’t record anything.
I prefer using hardback journal, the ruled kind that are around 8 in. x 10 in. The one I’m writing in now, though, is a spiral bound ruled journal that’s 6 in. x 9 in. and it’s very thick. I’m very choosey about the journals I write in because, if they don’t hold my “inspiration,” then I can’t write in them for very long.
What are your thoughts about journaling? Do you have journal type preferences? Do you write daily?
