Homework Frustrations

September 22nd 2008 21:36

This past weekend has, without a doubt, posed the most homework frustrations so far this school year. I am trying to find the balance between hounding my nephew about every assignment he has, and letting him handle things on his own.

My issue: He has assignments and work I know he needs to do, but he’s not doing it for one excuse or another.

Do I let him sabotage himself or do I step in and lay down the law? This is my quandary. He wants us to trust him to do things on his own and he repeats this fact often. So, needless to say, I find myself biting my tongue quite a bit . . . and wondering if I’m making a mistake.

How do you handle homework frustrations? Do you let your teen handle their assignments on their own (i.e. it’s their responsibility) or do you step in when you know they’re going to make a mess of things?

If he's telling you that he wants you to trust him, let him be. Just let him know that there will be consequences if he doesn't do well with his grades. Tell him that he won't be able to go out if he doesn't do what he needs to do.

Good luck!

Thank you for commenting! That's exactly what we did tonight. When he didn't have his backpack or any work with him, his uncle (hubby2b to me!) told him he has until progress reports to show us what he can do with his grades. If he didn't do well (i.e. a C or higher on everything), then there would be consequences. He didn't like the sound of that because progress reports come out next week and we're scheduling meetings with all of his teachers so they can explain everything that's been going on.
