Homework: Encourage Good Study Habits

September 29th 2008 22:38

Right now, my nephew is going through some changes. Changes in his routine, changes in his school, changes in his friends, and changes in his expectations with school top the list. It’s an upward battle, but worth every bit of the struggle. Why? It’s important to encourage these positive changes, so we’re not giving up.

The number one problem is homework. He’s very smart and understands the material, but he’s very lazy. This, of course, is going to rub off on my small and impressionable children. For example, my oldest son (he’s eight) left his homework at school and said it was fine.

Says who?

He claims his teacher said it was okay with her if any of the students left their folders containing their homework in their desks or their cubbies.

Um. That’s nice. It’s NOT okay with me!

So, I don’t know if this was a “copy cat” type of move because he hears these kind of excuses from our nephew all the time . . . or if he was lying about the teacher’s idea of what’s okay when it comes to homework . . . or if he’s being sincere, really did forget his homework, and his teacher is willing to let it slide from time to time.

It’s a quandary, let me tell you! I feel like if I’m not on my guard with every situation at all times things will either quickly slip by me or quickly spindle out of control . . . neither of which, of course, I want to happen for obvious reasons.

So, I’ll be spending some time this week learning how to encourage good study habits for our nephew. We’re also going to look at how we can make homework, learning, and other school work type things fun. He’s never had a positive experience when it comes to homework or school work. Either it was sluffed off, or it was pushed on him too hard.

Time to find a happy medium.
