Is Anything Original?

November 6th 2006 13:30

As far as fashion goes, is anything original? I had an argument recently with someone who claims they invented the whole, military/cargo/camo look. Laughable I know. I don't care if you were wearing the stuff 10 years ago.

I am not saying that all of us run out and jump on the bandwagon. But to some extent, all of us are swayed by the latest trends. What amuses me is that I've lived in four different states and have not seen anything "original" in a long time. Whether you're a goth chick in Ohio or Tennessee, your wardrobe pretty much remains the same.

This also makes me believe that punk rock is truly dead. I think this became apparent when Hot Topic began popping up in every suburban mall in America. I don't care what you call your self, emo, goth, punk, whatever... You aren't the first one to dye your hair pink and strap on a pair of converse. Most people feel strange, awkward, and lonely. It sure does cost a lot to be "different". I can't believe some of the prices in stores like Hot Topic. I'd rather go to a good will and rip up something myself!

Anyway, if you think you are anti-fashion and above the trends, think again. There are a heck of a lot of people in this world, and unless you are in Paris or New York right now designing a new line, you probably aren't wearing anything that hasn't been done before. Joe Shmo a few towns over is probably wearing those same shoes right now!

I think you're right--it's all been worn before. When ripped jeans were in fashion in the late 80s, there was a certain snob appeal if you wore "authentically" ripped jeans, meaning you wore them and worked in them until they ripped. The razor cuts made the jeans look sooooo wannabe, or so we thought. Not that it matters much, then or now.

I was recently asked to critique a science fiction story where the author had spent a lot of time designing the characters' clothes. This author thought the clothes were very original, but I had worn those same clothes in eighth grade. I guess we did dress pretty "out there" back then...

Yes, as someone once said to me "conforming to be non-conformist" The important thing is that you express yourself for who you are and not worry too much about what others may think. Just remember you are being judged by your clothes and shoes so don't give off the wrong image.

punk isn't dead but any truely punk is so subversive as to be invisible. They dress like the man and Maynard when he sings hooker with a penis is singing about true punk ideals. It isn't about putting on a show for the world it's about holding true to your own ideals and being deeply cynical about everything and everyone because everyone has an agenda and everyone lies.
Terrorists are the new punks anyway
