Books: Researching Life’s New Challenges
September 19th 2008 13:01
In an effort to further help my nephews through his various struggles, I have some books in my arsenal:
• How to Help Your Child with Homework: The Complete Guide to Encourage Good Study Habits and Ending the Homework Wars, by Jeanne Shay Schumm, Ph.D.: I purchased this book because he’s never really been pushed to do homework, make an effort, or stay on task before. He’s gotten used to lying about if he has assignments due, getting away with “forgetting” the details of assignments, and not studying for tests. So, I need to learn how to break these bad habits in a healthy, non-threatening manner.
• Is Your Teen STRESSED or DEPRESSED? A Practical and Inspirational Guide for PARENTS of Hurting TEENAGERS, by Dr. Acrh Hart and Dr. Catherine Hart Weber: It’s clear to me that my nephew feels hurt, abandoned, and given up on. It’s also clear to me he’s having trouble figuring out how to make new friends, make new adjustments, and get his life together. It’s a lot and I see him struggling with stress and depression. I also see him trying to come up with his own coping mechanisms, none of which are healthy, and it’s backfiring on him terribly. I need to learn how to reach him without putting pressure on him, and without making him feel I’m invading his space.
Once I’m finished reading these books, I’ll write up some reviews so you can see if it’s a purchase you need to make (or if it’s a book you need to request from the library). I’m all about researching new challenges, and the books surrounding me reflect that. I don’t like giving up on anything, so I do my best to learn everything I possible can whenever something new or difficult presents itself to me.
